Project Information
Westminster Dredging started production of graded shingle for beach renourishment at their Marchwood wharf in 2005.
Delivery commenced at the end of April 2006 with the coasters ‘Mari’ and ‘Rakel’, subcontracted from Finnish company ‘Sillanpaa’, taking loads of approx 1500T each to Lyme Bay. The aggregate was then transferred on to the side dumping vessels ‘Jopi’ and ‘Ville’ which delivered the material to the shore at high water, when placement could take place adjacent to the beach.
After marine delivery, dry plant was used to move the aggregate on to the beach where it was pushed into profile with bulldozers. A total of 40,000m3 of shingle was placed in 6 weeks.
This method meant that no truck delivery was required, essential in an area where access is only by the small roads that run through the centre of the seaside town.
